PRESS RELEASE COPY NATIONAL COSMETIC SURGERY BOARD AGREES WITH FDA PANEL REGARDING SILICONE IMPLANTS The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the national board that accredits doctors to perform plastic surgery, recently announced that it agrees with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel to conditionally approve the use of silicone breast implants. Silicone implants may soon be available again, pending final FDA approval. The safety of silicone implants has been improved and carefully documented in reports to the FDA advisory panel on Oct 14 and 15. This is the basis of the turnaround of FDA opinion on silicone implants. Although silicone implants have not been available in the US for a number of years, the updated implants have been used successfully in Europe. The reported advantages of silicone implants are that they feel more like natural breast tissue vs. saline implants, and are less complicated to insert during surgery. The recommended condition of approval is a requirement that the manufacturer creates a national breast surgery registry, to continually educate and inform patients regarding breast surgery with this device. Above all, however, ASPS plastic surgeons are concerned with the safety and well-being of their patients. The ASPS believes that important components of patient safety include being fully informed about the benefits and risks of breast surgery in general, continued data collection and study of the procedure and devices. The ASPS offers a patient education brochure on this surgery, which can be obtained at www.plasticsurgery.org. Dr. Burnett will keep you updated on progress regarding this important issue!
